Social media optimization in simple terms is making sure your website has all the relevant social media icons and links making it easy for visitor to A. connect with your company or brand B. interact with your brand and maybe gain some more incite as what you are all about. C. this also allows you to capture that visitor as a lead you can now market to them in the future.
The social media icons are typically seen at the top right corner of a website or the bottom or on the left or right. These icons range from the most popular like Twitter, Facebook, Youtube - too others like Ning, Digg, Stumbleupon or Google +. They are all useful, however some may be better at engaging your visitors depending on the type of business you have and the intended target audience ( people you wanna reach).

Starting out you should definitely have Facebook and Twitter , and if you have videos Youtube.
