Hi James Your question may mean two things- gaining more followers by influence and secondly the number(follower count only). So it is better if you meant the first one. So tweet good stuffs, discuss with like minded people, blog your thoughts, share your twitter on your emails and manually to friends to gain followers. But if you need numbers lots of service exist to increase your number of followers. I highly discourage this. Someone has already answered to your question here and advertised his own service. Those are fake bots and believe me those are useless. It's not bad to follow back interesting people. Follow people, be interesting, engage, others will follow you. Tweet regularly but not uselessly.
