Facebook Friend Requests can't go through; what can I do? am I doing something wrong?

Facebook friends are people with whom you have decided to link profiles on the social networking site. You can't add just anyone, however, as Facebook has implemented rules for the friending process. To add a user as a friend, an official request must be submitted and approved. Don't try to add people you don't know in real life, as Facebook discourages the behavior.

Sending Requests
Before someone is a confirmed friend on Facebook, you must submit an official friend request. Just point your browser to the potential friend's profile and click the "Add as Friend" icon at the top of the screen -- an option message may be included. If the user has set her privacy settings so that only "Friends of Friends" are allowed to submit friend requests, you will not see the icon on her profile unless you have mutual Facebook friends. In that case, submit a private message asking her to request you as a friend.

Request Approval
After you submit a friend request to another user, she must approve it before you officially become friends on the site. The next time the user logs into her Facebook account, she gets a notification in the banner at the top of the site alerting her to your request. She may review your name and the private message accompanying your request, if you included one. The user may also click on your name to view whatever information on your profile is available to "Everyone." Once she approves your request, the user is immediately added to your friend list.

Unwanted Requests
Facebook encourages users to only request friendship from other users they actually know. If you send out too many requests to strangers, and the recipients report to Facebook that they don't know you, the site may restrict your ability to send out friend requests. According to Facebook, there is no specific number of requests that warrants a friend request restriction. Rather, the site evaluates your overall behavior, including the quantity of requests and frequency at which you send them out. If you get a warning to stop sending requests to strangers, heed it or Facebook may impose further sanctions on your account.
