How can I promote my youtube channel?

So ever since youtube got rid of video responses I have had problems advertising my youtube channel. I don't like sharing my videos on my Facebook page yet, because I don't want to rely on my school to be the only ones who watch.
I have a beauty channel, and have been making videos for a little over a year. I have only managed to get 160 odd subscribers and I can't tell if it is my video quality or my lack of advertisement that if killing me.
I have a giveaway going that is about to close, but it hasn't helped too much.
