That's called a hash tag. It designated the word as a category rather than just a word ~ it helps the computer distinguish it from other words that you type.

Once you put a hashtag in front of a word, people can find it ~ along with every other entry that has that particular word tagged the same way.

It's normally used in "trending topics".
