It would actually depend on the type of network you're interested in. Is it business or personal networking? If its business then the best place to start would be Linked In, http://bx.businessweek.com, and Facebook. On the other hand if its for personal networking then Facebook. I would not recommend Orkut unless you're located in India, Brasil and a few more countries where its popular (but loosing market share)
