not sure how to do it on an iphone, but you have to go to your profile photos album and find it there, dont use the original copy that is in another album or it just creates a new copy and you wont be able to keep the likes and comments then

there should be an options link once you find the right picture that is already in your profile photos album... click that and then select make profile picture - if you did it right, it should say "you have already used this picture as your profile picture, do you want to use it again?"
