Mine.
- I was not allowed out of my house except to go to school. - I was not allowed to participate in extracurricular activities like drama or speech and debate. - I was not allowed to hang out with friends on weekdays or weekends. - It was not uncommon for my mother to show up at my school completely unannounced to check my grades and/or make sure I was actually in my classes. - Neither parent ever bothered to teach me how to drive, then yelled at me because I didn't know how. - I was prevented from holding a job, then yelled at when I didn't have one. - When I was 17/18 and tried to assert my independence by riding my bike everywhere, I was required to have my cellphone with the GPS turned on at all times so my mom could make sure I was where I said I was. It was not uncommon for her to show up where I was out with friends several times within an hour, to "check on" me. I lost a LOT of friends (and even some boyfriends) because of that. - My parents determined who I was "allowed" to be friends with. - Pretty sure my mom went through my phone every day (online phone services and stuff). - I had to fight tooth and nail to pursue my own interests. My mom was determined to make me do what she wanted me to do, regardless if I had any interest in it or not (soccer, Girl Scouts, 4H, poetry, writing, art...the list goes on and on), even going so far as to take things away from me that were not associated with whatever hobby she decided I would take up. BQ: Uh, yeah. They were. BQ2: Can't have them. Allergic. BQ3: Grapefruit. |
