This happens - but my best advice would be to go to her and tell her that YOU didn't blow the whistle - and you suspect that whoever is spreading the rumor is the one who actually did it.

If they don't believe it, then you will have to start over. On the bright side - and there is one - if people believed lies without ever even asking YOU, then they were not very good friends to begin with and may not be worth the bother.
