Try following other prominent persons, they will usually reciprocate and follow you too.

Also try following popular channels like #youtube and click on @name in them and follow them, then they may just reciprocate and follow you too.

Got a linkedin account too? Well they are having problems with
twitter, here's a link for additional info:

Another leads to follow are news and local tv twitter accounts, check on @names and follow them too.
