I think it's largely a teenage thing.

Most grown ups tend to be more sensible about sex but some never outgrow it. There are guys who have facebook pages dedicated to showing all the women they've had sex with. They are not young guys, and there followers are not teenagers. Those same people, the guys and their followers, refer to the women they have sex with as sl*ts. It's out there even if it isn't in your group of friends, or mine.
