I think you need to spend more time studying anatomy and proportion. You are able to draw from observation, that's a valuable skill to develop, but you need to take it to the next level so you know when your references are lying to you. Photographs flatten and distort reality, you need to understand how faces and bodies work in real life to fill in the gaps.

I would recommend looking up Andrew Loomis and downloading his books on portraits and figures. They are free online, and some of the best beginner instruction outside of a formal class.
