Absolutely!
In elementary and secondary school, English generally includes literature, composition, grammar, creative writing, language, linguistics, and various media formats. All of these elements incorporate the arts and humanities because of the skill and creative component required to write quality literature (or produce media) that connects others through the communicative medium, whether written or spoken/conveyed (such as journalism, speech, film, radio, photography, and theater/drama). Arts and Humanities encompasses the various components of the traditional English class mentioned above (as well as foreign languages) and overlaps with what we categorize as Fine Arts and the Social Sciences. Fine Arts consists of compositions of vocal and instrumental music, theater/drama, creative/interpretive dance, and traditional art (drawing, painting, sculpting, etc.). The branch of Social Sciences consists of history, philosophy, archeology, architecture, political science/government, economics, religion, psychology, sociology, and anthropology. Therefore, the category of Arts and Humanities truly does link people together across generations and cultures by means of sharing thoughts, ideas, and perspectives often found in or communicated via Language Arts or Fine Arts and studied though the Social Sciences. Hope this helps! |
