Why is it socially acceptable to mock Christianity but not other religions?

I've noticed a growing trend on social media, amongst younger people especially, a pathological hatred of Christianity, to which I am appalled at, but I also keep asking why?

First and foremost, I'm an atheist. However, I am one of the few that can be described as 'true neutral'. I don't care whether you follow a religion or whether you don't. At the end of the day, so long as you're a good person, that is all that matters.


One thing that baffles me is the persistent notion that all Christians are lunatic homophobes who are constantly trying to brainwash people. I may be atheist, but I have grown up around Christians - none of whom were homophobic or in any way bad people. On the contrary, they were some of the nicest people I have ever met.

The same can't be said for a lot of atheists. As a matter of fact, I tend to disassociate myself with them purely due to the disgusting way they treat some religious people.

For many people, it seems to be a bandwagon thing more than anything.

However for some, comes some real hypocrisy. Not just from ordinary people, but celebrities. Ricky Gervais for example, a man who prides himself on being an atheist, but goes about it in one of the most arrogant and rude ways.

Anyway, my point is, why is Christianity constantly mocked and ridiculed when there are certain religions that actually are far more intolerant towards homosexuality? (Without wanting to fuel an angry debate, I won't mention which one, but I think you can have a pretty good guess.)
