How come pop culture is more important then politics?

A pretty good question, but I don't know the answer.
As for Obama watching MTV. I don't remember all the details but he was getting ready to do an interview at a radio station or a tv station and the "news" was reporting that story. He and the interviewer had a brief exchange about it prior to the interview and the mic was on. Basically it was overheard.
But that lends itself to your original question about pop culture being more popular.
Why would news media at the level of interviewing the President also be "reporting" the antics of a hip-hop artist.
