Facebook friends, confused.?

I have previously asked posted the same question but I didnt get to see the answers. Ok so..
I added someone on facebook about a month ago, its obvious they are using their facebook account. Its still showing as "Awaiting friend confirmation" What does this mean?. Also on my news feed, It said that they had recently joined a group. If they havent accepted my friend request yet why is it showing on my news feed that they have joined a group? Can anyone help me?.
Also, i went onto their profile before and it said add as friend. i done it again and this box came up saying something about me having already sent a request
