Is my friend pushing people away because hes depressed or for attention?

Hello,

my friend keeps pushing people away from him for no reason. On a website called ask.fm (website where people write anonymous questions and you can answer) He keeps writing on his own giving himself 'hate'. Its seems like hes looking for attention as everyone he becomes friends with he pushes away always finding a flaw or something they have done. He is now starting to push me away for no reason and im not sure what his problem is. Its weird because the people who he is pushing away he keeps asking me 'Did (this person) write a facebook status about me?' as if he wants them to give him attention... Its really childish and I cant wrap my head around why hes doing this.
