1. He likes you, but only in a friendly fashion.
2. He suspects you like him, in a "more than friendly" fashion.

This creates a very awkward situation for him. He wants to be nice to you, but he doesn't want to give you the false impression that he's interested. On top of that, he's not entirely sure that you're into him in the first place, he just suspects, so he's looking for confirmation one way or the other (which would make his life a hell of a lot simpler).
