Of course parents are responsible. So is TV and social media, and the culture at large. Consider this- even though at 2 or 3 years old a child is able to give something back to the family by fetching things for Mama. by 10 years old, that same child, with training, would be able to do all the cleaning tasks of the household. By 17 a young person is able to learn and apply valuable life skills. By 18, that person is eligible to vote and go to war.
In the REAL world that we live in now, that child is not allowed to play outside without supervision. Forbidden to drink out of the hose, watches too much tv, doesn't play outside. doesn't lift a finger in the house, is given the belief that a life of privilege is due to him. 12 years of school, then 4 years of college have to occur before that person is considered worthy of working at McDonald's. He can't move out of the house because of crippling debt, he can't move on with his life because of lack of funds to get started and a lack of saleable skills. Parents are both working 40 hours or more a week. We live only to work. Where is the family time? Where is the relational interactions that help kids learn what they need to learn about keeping relationships clean? Where is the time for teaching and learning that comes with relating? Our modern focus is on looks, sex and pleasure. It's infantile. And there is no place to hang pride in a situation like that. |
