How can we become more conscious consumers?

When people see a product/item become popular within everyone else, there is a higher chance that they will purchase it even though they might not actually want it or need it.Social networks such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Tumblr play a big role on this because teens share items to one another increasing the popularity on it and increasing the chances of it getting purchased.


I would like to know what you believe people can do in order to not fall in trends and to become an more independent buyer.
