Does it look better if you have more or less Facebook 'friends'?

I agree with you, I think it is better to have less
I have 122 but I'm not actually friends with all of those. A lot of them are people from my school that I don't talk to but added me anyway and I accepted because I didn't want to appear rude. But I can't delete them because they are in my classes at school so it would be very awkward if they found out. I think I'll just delete them when I leave school, it is my final year now anyway
But yeah I think it really looks pathetic to have loads of facebook friends; no one speaks to 400 people on a regular basis. It could be hard enough to keep up with 80!! I think adding people for "numbers" is pathetic and like you say, it makes the person seem like they are on facebook all the time, which implies they have no life.
There is no point having such a high number of people because I consider it more pathetic to be adding people that you don't know or don't talk to!
