As Menace says SATA-3 is back compatible with the earlier SATA standards.

However I feel compelled to point out that SATA-I, SATA-II and SATA-III or the SATA-1, -2, -3
are incorrect nomenclature.

The proper names are "SATA 1.5", "SATA 3.0" and "SATA 6.0"
