im not sure if i should go on a date with this guy?

so I used to know him in high school we started talking on facebook then he gave me his number. we have been talking for two months now he is in the army and I just joined the military as well .He calls me every night and we talk for hours ,I really enjoy talking to him he makes me laugh a lot .the only problem is he told me he has four booty calls and this friend he jokes around with and calls his wife. i really like him but i cant tell if he sees me as a potential girlfriend or just another booty call. He wants to go on a date with me in about a year i know that's a long time its only a year because we are both in the military and don't have the time to go now .anyways im not sure if i should just walk away from this or see where it goes .
i just don't understand why he would put that much effort to call me every night for a few hours if he didn't like me .we talk about our childhoods ,work, just about anything and everything .its been so long since ive been able to get lost in conversation with another person. i have dated nice guys where i was their main focus but i didn't have any connection like i do with this guy . i did ask him if he was seeing anyone and i like the fact that he was honest with me .idk half of me wants to go for him and the other half just wants to forget about him.
