Sometimes companies pay for likes because they believe this will provide a degree of reputability to them. "Wow, 10,000 people like this company - it MUST be good." Personally, I think this is silly - anyone who's been on FB more than a few weeks knows that likes can be bought, making this number meaningless.

Even sillier is when individual people buy likes. What, exactly, do they expect to gain from it? It's not like they're in business and need to convince potential buyers.
