Under what "different circumstances"??? Sounds like you had a number of years to make the choice to be together, but neither of you did that...I can't imagine what other circumstances you think would've made a difference, unless you mean if you two had lived fairly close together to begin with, but then the relationship would've been different (online) as there would have been a lot less cultural comparison since one of you would've been already living within the culture of the other person...

He was a good online friend...and maybe he can continue to be...that's all...with only one face-to-face visit, you really can't have known him well enough for love to have developed...you may be in love with the person you think he is or wish he was, but that may or may not be reality...it can take a while to really learn who someone else is (and often requires being with them through ups and downs as well as just the day-to-day mundane part of life)...
