Nobody can tell how many times someone has been to your account. If you still want to see his tweets, just get a twitter! It's not something bad to have, I'd say just get a twitter and then you'll be able to casually check it and he still won't know. He might have went to private because he wanted to monitor who follows him, that's what private means (you can say yes or no if someone wants to follow you) so if you know him I'm sure that he'll let you follow him and there shouldn't be any worry Smile
