Very uncomfortable. And if one of my former coworkers who I got together with sometimes for lunch sent me one of those kinds of emails, I'd no longer be having lunch with them. Family and close friends are one thing, but those people are neither, which is just awkward, at least on the receiving end.

Most vets will work out a payment plan with you for something like this.
