if you enter 1,000.... then you will pay whatever is the highest bid... meaning.. if it goes to 500... and your 1,000 is still the highest.. 500 is it. If you can't go over 220.. then bid that... and leave it alone.. you will either win it at 220... or your 220 bid will be surpassed by someone.. don't bid 1,000 if you can't pay 1,000...
