He can't just have a switch and a modem. Unless what you refer to as a "switcher" is a router. And the vast majority of wireless routers do not have antennae.

Maybe he simply turned off the wifi completely or has just turned off SSID broadcast. If the SSID broadcast is turned off, then you will never see the wifi network, even though it is still there. Then there is also the use of a MAC address list. Any of these things can be used to hide a wife network.
