The $50 is for the phone on a contract, the iPhone without a contract costs $649.

What I recommend you do is buy the Samsung Galaxy Nexus; It's only $349 (It used to be $849, but Google shaved off an amazing $500 to make newcomers feel welcome). Once you buy the phone, get a prepaid plan on either T-Mobile or AT&T, and make your life a lot easier.
