Your bil sounds like a jerk. Funeral directors are highly trained and supportive because they do care. (most of them) .When I made funeral arrangements I was never pushed into buying "stuff" I didn't need. Your Des sounds like a very nice person. Don't look at his career but look at his character. He smart, polite, a hard worker, gentleman, motivated. If he is the one for you, the creepiness of his job should ebb a bit. If it doesn't ,you don't to take part in it. You'll have your own career.
