how do i become awesome on tumblr?

Use Weheartit.com and share those pictures on Tumblr. It really helps! you can search tags and everything (ex. Grunge, Food, One Direction) and then you just click on a picture, click "share", choose Tumblr, and then you can add a description or delete one, click post, and bam Smile just do that a few times and I promise you'll have notes and followers in no time!
