I completely agree, after Google animal updates you should carefully analyze every backlink source and make sure that the link you're going to get comes from a trusted source and your site won't be penalized for it.
As per my experience, those tools that provide you with numerous data and metrics are the most effective. For instance, you may have a look at WebMeUp - http://webmeup.com/ - to get the idea. This is a one-stop solution for keyword research, rank tracking, competitor analysis and other tasks, and in my opinion is a very decent example of what SEO tools should be about after Penguin and Panda updates.
