Hmm.. Tricky! People are likethat! If you reaally want to be friends with him then message him and be straight. Ask him if hes ignoring you and put ' if you are ignoring me or do not want me in your life then please just make it clear.
But yeah add him as a friend and just see what happens. If he doesnt accept your request after a few weeks just forget about him! Some people are pathetic and just dont deserve you! Good luck!
