Advice on messaging girl on Facebook?

i'm right in the middle of talking to a girl for the first time right now

(just to preface this, i'm generally a shy person and dont to this very often)

I decided to start the conversation with the usual hi, how are you.. then I asked if she went to a party last night.. moved on to ask her what she's doing as a degree as I noticed she's at Uni and it kinda kept rolling on from there.. take it easy

and remember one thing, if she doesn't like you (i'm not saying she wont).. dont take it too hard, its the reason that I dont do this more often because a crush once told me she wouldnt go out with me.
