There are certainly a number of alternatives to traditional publishers these days, I have seen some successful authors of serial fantasy titles self published to cut out the huge publishing company cut.

You could start with an easy to publish Amazon Kindle title or offer a downloadable ebook on your own site.

Here are some Online Print On Demand Publishers that save you the expense of a production run and leaves room in your garage for a car.

http://www.Lulu.com/ they also handle drop shipping to USA (overseas orders cost considerably more)

Anthony Rowe is the largest print on demand publisher for the UK and Europe:

You have to pay about $200 for an ISBN# for a physical book, but a real book gains you a certain prestige.

There is a lot of literature regarding the subject on the web.

Certainly getting copies into the hands of reviews would be one promotion step, and perhaps a quick way to learn if there is a market for you work.

You can get a little exposure here: worthyofpublishing.com

Of course without the publishing company machine behind it you would have to do your own promotion or paid advertising, certainly you would want a dedicated web site, which can cost virtually nothing, a free blog like Blogger.com with a $12/yr custom domain name added would do.

There are neary 10,000 mostly how to titles sold with the assistance of affiliate marketers through Clickbank.com the typical 50% affiliate commission seems shocking, but these are downloadable titles with no real production cost, with 100,000 affiliates out there, a few authors have made millions there.
