Netgear wireless router?

Don't feel stupid, no one ever said networking was easy, ha ha ha.

You have to go to the router settings, and try to click "release DNS".
You access router settings by going to an internet browser (preferably on the computer) and type 192.168.1.1
That will bring you to your router's settings. Once you get to that page, it will ask you for a username and password. Normally, the default name is admin and the default password is password. After you are in, you can easily change the password to whatever you want. Also, if that doesnt work, it should tell you the username and password on the back panel of the router.

Also, when you are connected to the router via ethernet cable, are you able to access the internet? If so, check to make sure your wifi is enables on your laptop and when you're in your settings menu of your router, you should go to "wireless settings" and make sure everything in that menu is correctly marked off and your device is connecting. In addition to that, did you try to get wifi from any other device, like a phone, tablet, another computer, etc?

If all these options still do not work, return the router back to the store and get a new one.
Good luck! -Chaos

EDIT: Matt, changing the TCP/IPv4 and IPv6 settings wont do anything. This will only give you more problems when trying to connect to other routers.
