If you are talking about SEO, when people mention Meta tags, they usually talk about the Title tag, Meta Description and the Meta Keywords. All these are within the HTML coding of your site or page.

Out of the 3 tags, title tag plays a more important role in SEO. Search engine bots crawl the title tag to determine what a page is about. Furthermore, the page title tag will appear in the Search Engine Result Pages so the searchers will also have a clue what your page is about.

Meta Description and Meta Keywords are not used to determine a page's ranking anymore. However, that doesn't mean it is not important. Just not as important.

Meta Descriptions appear in the Search Engine Result Page as well and it is the short blurb under each result to describe what the page is about. It is important to get searchers to click on your site thus increase your site's traffic and the CTR of the results.

To most people, they stop paying attention to meta keywords because it doesn't affect ranking nor getting people to your page. However, I suggest not to ignore it because there are a lot of smaller engines that might still use it. You don't want to ignore those small engines since they might send some traffic to your site.

You can use meta tags in the HTML section of your page:
