1. The core of your question seems to be upload speed on the internet through put. What did u use to check the speed of the download . The best way to determine download and upload speed is sites like http://speedtest.net/
Checking it with a download is not going to give a correct answer.

2. What pipe are you on ie. what bandwidth did you buy. Upload/ download.

3. Connecting directly to the modem would be faster since you would avoid using the wireless router since wifi has its own bottlenecks.

4. If you do torrents they will affect your bandwidth.
