AdBlockPlus works great but you can also block trackers that send ads to other places such as your email, using add-ons (to Firefox) like Ghostery and HistoryBlock. Download Firefox, then click on "Tools", then Add-ons and do a search for things like ad blockers and anti-tracking. Many add-ons overlap so look at the user reviews.
