I messed up my internet connection by changing ip address?

I was trying to change my ip address for certain reasons that is not important to this... anyway I followed instructions I found on google like hooking the cord directly from my desktop to my laptop, turned modem and router off, turned back on, turned computer off after connection was visible and turned computer back on again or something like that. I then reconnected the cord back to the desktop and redid everything the way it was, now my laptop is connecting to my internet connection but says no internet access. it is still working fine on the desktop where it is connected directly instead of using wifi but my laptop is picking up and connecting to the wifi but still no internet access, my phone won't connect to the wifi either and neither will the rocku system in the other room. What the hell did I do???
now I cannot see my wireless network connection name on my laptop. i am only picking up the neighbor's. I have already troubleshooted several times, I've turned the modem and router on and off again several times and I don't know how to check the WIFI setting like you said. I am not that great at computers. addition info would help please.
