Before you start telling everybody about your invention, make sure they sign a NDA or Non Disclosure Agreement. Also, the cheapest way to file for a patent (I did it years ago), is by filing for a Provisional Patent. It gives you the protection for about one year, plus it costs about $500. I did this when I invented a baby safety product. Plus, it gives you the opportunity to test your invention, if it doesn'twork, then you didn't spend the thousands that a regular patent costs.
