Facebook makes most of it's money by advertising. They use their strong base of over 500 million daily active users to target ads with “relevance”, based on the information individuals share with the website

Other "non-advertising revenue" revenue comes from social games like CityVille, FarmVille, Empires & Allies and ZyngaPoker. For example, in Farmville, users can harvest a virtual farm by planting and growing crops and trees and buying livestock. They are given virtual coins to set up their farm and they earn more from matured crops. But, some eager users who want to progress through the game can buy extra virtual coins with real money

In 2011, 12% of Facebook's revenue (around $445 million) came from virtual goods according to documents filed at SEC

Thus, they make millions of dollars every year by serving ads & social games on mobile platforms
