Well you optimize your site for keywords that people may use on different search engines like Google etc to find your site. This optimization step usually means that you make your content unique, interesting and people friendly while intelligently using those keywords within your content. What this does in very simple words is that when your website is 'noticed' by search engines for having good content that is unique and has a certain density for a keyword or key-phrase it bumps up your ranking in the search engines rankings. This means that more people will be able to come to your site as it is more accessible (closer to the top rankings).
