I don't think you did anything wrong, you were just trying to raise a health issue. I didn't know that actually. I think you should just say something to him like "Sorry if my statement about water got interpreted the wrong way. I just meant that you shouldn't drink it non stop, but you're right, it's good to drink a lot of it, just not too much" and then state how much "too much" is so people know. I don't know myself so I'd be interested to find out.
