you don't have to get a facebook account just to please others, but facebook is a really coming-of-age way to communicate. If you go to a big school or don't know too many people at your school, it would probably be a great way to jump start your new self.
Also, if you are planning on going to college, facebook is HUGE in college. Think of how many people you can meet and talk to or see who's all like you on facebook. It's free, and you're not losing anything.
