Well, SEO, PPC and SMO are 3 different types of marketing, each have some specialised courses and certifications as well.

In regards to SEO, everything is practical. Try out different link building strategies for different websites and keep experimenting with it. You will discover new and effective techniques to build links which results in good rankings.
