I'd say your guess about the notice having something to do with porn, possibly an illegal type of porn, is the reason his ISP has contacted him. It's really surprising that the police didn't come knocking on the door before any notice was sent. It did him no good to destroy his hard drive, because the police can confiscate the records of Verizon that will list the web sites the computer link has visited for the past 6 months or so, depending on how long Verizon keeps their files. All ISP's are required to keep a record of links visited for every computer connection. The only thing that has to be determined by an investigation, is who was using the computer terminal when any illegal links were used.
