Most sites, including Yahoo Answers make money from selling ad space.

Free hosting accounts may inserts ads on the site you create, or make money from selling service upgrades as users get more serious about their site. They can fit hundreds or thousands of sites on a single computer, so the hosting cost can be pretty low.
