The only mistake you're making is trying to look inward for some fixable issue. It's not a problem, this thing that has you all worried. It will happen when it happens. The secret, which isn't really a secret is to just do your life and lifestyle things as normal...and ENJOY it all. When you stop looking, that's when it will find YOU. Much more attractive to friends and potential love interests is a person who is so obviously OK with theirselves and with their own interests that they don't need anyone else....they'll want to get in on it.
Since you're already into Ren/Medieval history and Tolkien....do you ever do historical reenactment, living history events? Many like-minds to be found there..and most of us are Tolkien addicts from the way-back.
